Australian Stem Cell Centre
Biotechnology Centre of Excellence
The Australian Stem Cell Centre was established to create a national multi-institutional research and discovery program for the development of treatments for serious diseases using stem cell and related technologies. The Centre is pursuing research involving four platform technologies: embryonic stem cells; adult stem cells, tissue repair technology, and immune system modulation technology.
The Centre is focusing on products for the treatment of blood and heart diseases, including therapeutics for the treatment of diseases such as leukaemia and chronic heart failure and is undertaking research on basic platform technologies with applicability to the treatment of diabetes, as well as respiratory, neurological and orthopaedic diseases and injuries.
The Centre is jointly funded by the Australian Research Council and the Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research.
The Centre draws together expertise and infrastructure to create a critical mass of research, further developing Australia's expertise and global standing in the field. Education programs at the undergraduate and post-graduate level, and a full-time education officer significantly increase the level of information broadly available about this rapidly developing field.
The central node of the Australian Stem Cell Centre is located in the Monash Science, Technology, Research and Innovation Precinct (STRIP) with a second node recently established at the University of Queensland. The Centre is partnered with ten organisations with complementary research capabilities: Monash University; University of Adelaide; University of NSW; University of Queensland; Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre; Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute; the Murdoch Childrens Research Institute; the Baker Heart Research Institute; the Mater Medical Research Institute and the Howard Florey Institute of Experimental Physiology and Medicine. The Centre's Chief Executive Officer is Professor Stephen Livesey.
The Centre is required to comply with all relevant legislation, regulations and ethics codes, including outcomes of decisions taken by the Council of Australian Governments on 5 April 2002.
The Centre was initially named the National Stem Cell Centre. In August 2004, it was renamed the Australian Stem Cell Centre.
